At Virtuoso we believe that sustainable travel revolves around three pillars: protecting the planet, supporting local economies, and preserving natural and cultural heritage.

The Director of Sustainability will guide and steward strategy, implementation, and management of corporate and network sustainability programs in support of these three pillars. This role will provide strategic guidance and advisory support for an emerging ESG program for Virtuoso.

Essential Duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Stays abreast of trends and develops strategies to enhance brand value and support Virtuoso's position as a travel industry leader in sustainability in collaboration with the Marketing division.
  2. Develops and implements strategies and programs to increase network engagement in sustainability programs.
  3. Vets and assesses proposals made by outside organizations to Virtuoso related to sustainable tourism and provides recommended action for further consideration by Virtuoso's leadership.
  4. Ensures proper sustainability benchmarks are established and maintained using ESG measures, standards, and methodologies.
  5. Build relationships with key external stakeholders in sustainability community.
  6. Serves as the point person in partnerships between Virtuoso and other organizations, as they relate to sustainability initiatives, and provides status updates to appropriate senior management.
  7. Collaborate with key internal stakeholders to develop internal and external communication strategies to publicize Virtuoso's sustainability effort and promote broad awareness of initiatives and goals.
  8. Attends Virtuoso events as requested to promote awareness among Virtuoso Members and Partners on sustainable tourism. Build relevant market-based educational material/presentations. May serve as a speaker or workshop leader on sustainable tourism at Virtuoso events.
  9. Occasional travel as required.

Educational and Skills Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree required, major in Environmental Science/Sustainability preferred.
  • 7+ years' experience developing sustainability programs with demonstrated results
  • 4+ years' experience in sustainability practices relating to tourism
  • Strong financial acumen
  • Strong understanding of cultures across the globe
  • Effective public speaking skills, ability to motivate and educate others and create enthusiasm for sustainability programs
  • Proven ability to work effectively with diverse businesses and cultures
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Proven ability to work independently and be self-motivated
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, etc.)

Type/Nature of Contacts:

External: Contact with various external parties including Members, Partners and outside vendors.

Internal: Frequent contact with Virtuoso staff at various levels.
